Find an Optometrist

In brief

An optometrist is a trained primary eye-care professional who tests vision, prescribes glasses and contact lenses, detects eye conditions and refers patients for specialist treatment when needed.

This information is general and does not replace an eye examination or advice from an eye-care professional. If you have a problem with your eyes or vision, please see an optometrist or ophthalmologist.

What happens in an eye examination

  • A discussion about your vision, health and daily needs.
  • Tests of how clearly you see, at distance and near.
  • A check of how your eyes focus and work together.
  • An examination of the health of the front and back of the eye.
  • Advice and, if needed, a prescription or a referral.

What to bring

  • Your current glasses and contact lenses.
  • A list of medicines you take.
  • Details of any family history of eye disease.
  • Previous eye reports, if you have them.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an optometrist and an ophthalmologist?

Optometrists are primary eye-care professionals who test vision, prescribe glasses and contact lenses and detect eye conditions. Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who diagnose and treat eye diseases and perform eye surgery. The two professions work together.

How often should I have my eyes tested?

Most adults benefit from an eye test every one to two years. Children, older adults and people with diabetes or a family history of eye disease may need to be tested more often.
